According to the Sunday Telegraph London, a number of studies have shown significant correlations between sedentary occupations and heart disease, with inactivity being more of a defining factor than diets high in fat and sugar. If correct, these results may indicate that if you are in a sedentary occupation where you sit for hours and you also exercise regularly at the gym, you might actually be worse off health-wise than if you move around just a small amount constantly at work and never attend the gym! This may have enormous implications for employers who provide Alabama group health insurance to their workers and who wish to improve the health and well-being of their workforce.
The research includes a Canadian study in which Amish men and women were fitted with pedometers and found to walk up to 5 times more than the average person. Despite a diet quite high in fat and calories, the Amish have drastically lower rates of obesity than the average American.
As a result of various studies including his own, British scientist James Levine invented the treadmill desk known as the “Walkstation”, which has been adopted in some U.S. workplaces, along with the “walking meeting”. While the idea of walking-while-you-work might not be suitable for every workplace, regular moving about the office may certainly be beneficial for workplace health, and may even result in less need for expensive medical bills and Alabama group health insurance claims!
